To enable members to get to grips with the requirements of GMP compliance, the HPA will be hosting a comprehensive workshop dealing with the essential principles of GMP based on current and future legislation. Aimed at both marketing and manufacturing companies, the workshop will also give an understanding of future requirements that are to be implemented.
An impressive array of knowledgeable speakers has been booked to enlighten participants on the various aspects of GMP. DoH Head of Inspectorate and Deputy Registrar, Dr Joey Gouws, will start proceedings with a short talk on the PIC Conference in Geneva. He will be followed by Deputy Director of the DoH, Mr Enos Motshitela, giving the DoH perspective on the issue. Mrs Leanna Blumenthal will then outline GMP Practicalities, after whom DoH Manager of Law Enforcement, Mr Griffiths Molewa, is scheduled to talk on Counterfeit, Substandard and Adulterated Medicine. He will be followed by Colonel John Matroos of the SA Police Service discussing the Legal Implications of Counterfeit Goods.
This workshop is geared towards managing and financial directors, registration pharmacists, regulatory personnel, marketing and production personnel, pharmacists and any others who are involved in GMP or who are responsible for GMP in the pharmaceutical, neutraceutical, herbal, homoeopathic and cosmetic industries.

Various government Acts relate to the CAMS industry, among them Act 101, Act 54, and the Consumer Protection Act. It is vital that all those involved in the industry are aware of the ramifications of these. To ensure that members have the relevant information and insight, the HPA is to host a workshop in October that will elucidate on those government Acts most relevant to CAMS. Hosting the workshop will be industry aficionado, Janet Welham.
Presently the owner and CEO of Saige Marketing, a company that specialises in medium term consulting on business strategy, marketing strategy, implementation and project management, Welham has more than 23 years of senior management experience within the Food, Cosmetic, Complementary Health and Wine Industries. She has been actively involved in the marketing and selling of products in Southern Africa and Australia and is consequently very well versed in the workings and requirements of the South African Department of Health (DoH), Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA), Therapeutic Goods Association of Australia (TGA) and other local and international legislative requirements for the marketing and manufacturing of Foodstuffs, Beverages, Complementary Medicines, Cosmetics and Wine.

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) would like to extend an invitation to food scientists and technologists around the world to attend a global event with an African feel in Cape Town. The IUFOST 15th World Congress of Food Science and Technology is scheduled to take place in South Africa's Mother City on August 22-26 2010. On the congress agenda is a superb scientific programme featuring world-class speakers, an exciting social programme a world-class trade exhibition as well as technical tours and pre and post conference tours.
The call for papers attracted no less than 1329 abstracts from 77 countries - an impressive turnout that is indicative of the quality and breadth of research that will be on view at the Congress, as well as highlighting the global nature of the profession.
