SOY PRODUCTS HELP LUNGS AND BRAIN FUNCTION

Soy products and soy isoflavones have been shown in Japanese and Australian studies to elicit positive effects on both the lungs and mens' memory. In the Japanese study, researchers looked at patients aged 50-75 who had been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They found that, "a significant reduction in COPD risk was evident for the highest versus lowest quartile of daily total intake of soybean products." They said that the observed benefits, consistent with findings from previous studies, could be a result of the anti-inflammatory benefits of soyfoods, but added that more research is needed to understand the underlying biological mechanism. This study was published in the journal Respiratory Research.
The findings of a small study in Australia suggest that daily supplements of soy isoflavones could help boost a man's mental function and memory. Scientists from the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide reported in the British Journal of Nutrition that men receiving daily supplements of soy isoflavones performed significantly better in tests of their working memory. They note that the improvements in cognitive processes could be related to the oestrogenic effects of the isoflavones. These findings were published in the British Journal of Nutrition.
